Theoretical Physicist

Stephen Hawking (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018) was a British theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge between 1979 and 2009.

Hawking is known for his theories on black holes and for his seminal book A Brief History of Time, first published in 1988.

A cultural icon, Hawking featured in The Simpsons, Futurama, an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory, X-Men comics, Doctor Who and his voice featured on Pink Floyd, Keep Talking (The Division Bell, 1994) and Talkin’ Hawkin (The Endless River, 2014) and New Horizons by Brian May in 2018.

This historically important portrait was taken two years before his death in 2018, and was the last portrait of Hawking taken on film in his office at the University of Cambridge. This was the frist time Hawking had viewed Sir Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica and is the only portrait taken of Hawking with Sir Isaac Newton’s own annotated copy of Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, from 1687. The image was featured across the world on its publication.

Both Newton and Hawking were Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge.

Taken at Stephen Hawking's office at the University of Cambridge on 16 February 2016.
